Born in Cork, Ireland, in 1868, Smith O'Brien came to San Francisco in 1890. He passed the Architects Examination and soon opened a studio designing fine buildings. He studied landscape painting at the California School of Fine Arts and then in Paris. He exhibited in both California and Paris. O'Brien held the office of President of the California Society of Etchers for three years. He referred to himself as an architect, painter and etcher. O'Brien continued to exhibit in San Francisco until his death. His bold modern oils include coastal scenes and landscape of the San Francisco Bay area.
